Day Beach Clubs on the Sand Spits

Four clubs on four spits, each open from May to the end of September and each running on the same simple offer: a reserved lounger with real shade, a towel, a locker, a freshwater shower, a lifeguard watching the swimming area and a kitchen that serves food worth eating. Paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling sets and beach games are available all day, and the shallow water on the sheltered side stays warm and calm for hundreds of metres. Four Beaches Run the Way We Would Want to Use Them

The first club was taken over after a bad summer in which the previous operator had packed six hundred loungers onto a spit that comfortably holds two hundred and fifty. We halved the number, doubled the shade, put a proper kitchen in place of a fryer, hired two lifeguards instead of none, and made a modest profit in the first season anyway. That arithmetic — fewer people paying willingly rather than more people leaving early — has been the basis of all four sites ever since.

Everything we install is designed to be removed. Decking is modular, shade structures are anchored in sand with screw piles, the kitchen and bar are containerised, and power comes from solar with battery storage and a silent backup. At the end of September the whole club is lifted out within four days and the spit is left as bare sand for the winter, which is both a licence condition and the reason the dune vegetation behind our sites is in better condition than it was ten years ago.

The staff are largely local and largely returning: lifeguards with current qualifications, two cooks, a bar team, a maintenance pair and a manager on each site who is on the sand rather than in an office. We pay above the seasonal norm, provide meals on every shift and publish rotas two weeks ahead, which is why roughly three quarters of the team come back each summer and why service does not collapse in August.

Six Things We Do Not Compromise On

The details that decide whether a beach day is restful or merely survived.

Space Between the Loungers

Each club has a fixed capacity worked out from its usable dry sand, and once it is reached no further beds are sold, whatever the day and whatever anybody offers. In practice that means at least four metres between neighbouring pairs of loungers, wide walkways that a pushchair can use, and a swimming area that never feels like a public pool. Guests can move a bed into or out of the shade during the day, spread a picnic out, or simply lie down without a stranger's radio a metre away. It is the single most common reason people give for returning.

Shade That Is Actually Cool

Sand reflects most of the heat that falls on it, so a thin parasol achieves very little by noon. Our shade comes from broad tensioned sails, cabana frames with side panels and a covered lounge deck, all repositioned during the day as the sun moves, with cold water and cold towels circulating from midday. Every bed is guaranteed shade for the four hottest hours, and the deepest shade nearest the shallow water is reserved for families with small children and for anyone who asks.

Lifeguards, Not Signs

Two qualified lifeguards are on duty at every club from opening to closing, watching a marked and buoyed swimming area from a raised chair, with rescue boards, throw bags, oxygen and a first-aid room behind the bar. Flags are set each morning after checking the current on the seaward side, and the guards move the buoys when the sandbank shifts. Children's wristbands with a table number are handed out free, and the guards are trained to look for lost ones. Nothing about this is decorative.

A Kitchen Rather Than a Fryer

Two cooks work each site producing grilled fish and vegetables, salads, flatbreads, fruit and a short list of dishes that survive the heat, with a proper cold chain and ice delivered twice a day rather than melting since dawn. Prices are printed and identical to the town, children's portions and allergy requests are handled without fuss, and nothing is served in single-use plastic. Coffee is made on a real machine. Guests can also bring their own food, which we make a point of saying out loud.

Equipment Included, Not Upsold

A lounger booking includes a towel, a locker, freshwater showers, a beach umbrella if you prefer one, drinking water, snorkelling masks, beach games and use of the shaded lounge. Paddleboards and kayaks are charged by the hour at a rate that does not assume you will forget to return them. Buoyancy aids, phone pouches, sunscreen for topping up and a pump for inflatables cost nothing. There are no minimum spends, no service charges added at the end and no separate fee for using a shower.

The Spit Left Bare Each Winter

Every structure is demountable, nothing is fixed into the sand permanently, and the entire club is removed within four days of closing. Behind each site we fence and replant the dune, funding the work from a fixed share of ticket revenue, and we take part in the spring beach clean before opening. Waste is separated and carried off the spit daily; there are no bins on the sand and no litter either, because staff sweep the whole site in a line at the end of every day.

Loungers and Day Beds

Single loungers and double day beds bookable online for a specific date or taken on arrival while capacity lasts. The price includes a towel, locker, showers, drinking water, snorkelling gear, beach games and shade for the middle of the day. Beds can be moved between sun and shade at any time, and staff will bring drinks and food to them. Season tickets are available for regulars and pay for themselves within about ten visits, with priority booking at weekends included.

Cabanas and Small Groups

Six cabanas at each club, with side curtains, a large day bed, a low table, a fan and a dedicated member of staff, seating up to six people. Cabanas sit at the quiet end of the site away from the main lounge and can be joined for larger parties. The booking includes a chilled drinks service, a set menu agreed in advance if wanted, and use of paddleboards for the whole day. They are the usual choice for families with babies and for anyone working from the beach.

Paddleboard and Kayak Hire

Wide, stable inflatable boards, sit-on-top kayaks in single and double, and a few touring boards for those who want distance, hired by the hour or the day with buoyancy aids, adjustable paddles, dry bags and waterproof pouches included. The sheltered side of every spit is flat almost all day, and a marked area keeps beginners away from the channel. A short lesson is free with any first hire, and a safety boat covers each site during opening hours.

Lessons and Children's Sessions

Paddleboard and kayak lessons for adults and children in groups of six or fewer, plus morning sessions for ages six to twelve combining paddling, swimming lessons, snorkelling and beach games with a ratio of one instructor to four children. All instructors hold paddlesport and lifesaving qualifications. Non-swimmers are welcome in the shallow marked area with an instructor standing beside them, and buoyancy aids are provided in every size from toddler upwards.

Food, Bar and Evening Service

The kitchen serves from opening until an hour before closing, with a shorter menu in the last hour and a barbecue on Fridays. Drinks run from fresh juices and iced tea to local wine and a handful of well-made cocktails, all at printed prices. On selected evenings through the summer the clubs stay open past sunset for a slow session with acoustic music, lanterns and a grill menu, finishing before the noise regulations begin rather than pushing against them.

Private Hire and Events

Any club can be reserved outside opening hours for birthdays, weddings, company days and photo shoots, including the loungers, cabanas, kitchen, bar, lifeguards and water equipment. We arrange catering, furniture layout, lighting, music within permitted hours and transport from the town. Capacity is capped at what the spit can genuinely hold, a manager is present throughout, and every booking includes a written wet-weather and wind plan because a beach event needs one.
