Surf Schools on the Atlantic Shores

The west coast produces swell almost every week of the year, which is excellent for surfing and unforgiving of schools that teach on whichever beach happens to be outside the door. We work across four beaches with different orientations and decide each morning where the lesson goes, based on swell direction, wind, tide and the level of the group. Boards, wetsuits, transport and insurance are included, coaches are certified and hold current lifesaving qualifications, and nobody is put in water beyond what they can handle.

About us

Four Beaches, One Decision Every Morning

The school was founded by two coaches who had worked seasons at schools that taught wherever their van was parked, regardless of whether the beach was safe or the waves were suitable. Their alternative was simple and logistically inconvenient: hold the group at the meeting point, look at the forecast and the actual sea, and drive to whichever of four beaches is working that morning. It costs an extra twenty minutes and it is the difference between a lesson where beginners stand up and one where they get washed sideways for two hours.

Everything else follows from that decision. Coaches are certified surf instructors with current lifesaving and first-aid qualifications, retrained each spring, and the ratio never exceeds five students to one coach in the water. Beaches are assessed daily for rip currents, and the safe zone is marked before anybody enters. Boards are soft-topped and sized to weight rather than handed out at random, and wetsuits run from child sizes upwards in two thicknesses, washed after every use.

We also do the things a school on a working coast should do: teach water safety in the local schools free of charge, keep a set of boards and suits for children who cannot afford lessons, run beach cleans through the winter and post an honest daily conditions report that anyone may use whether they are booked with us or not.

Advantages

Why Students Progress Here

Six things that decide whether somebody surfs for a week or for the rest of their life.

The Beach Is Chosen, Not Assumed

Four beaches with different aspects, sandbanks and shelter mean that on almost any day one of them is producing clean, manageable waves. The coach checks the forecast the night before and the sea itself in the morning, then decides. Beginners are taken to whitewater on a gently shelving bank; improvers go where there is a shoulder to ride; on the rare day when nothing is suitable, the session becomes theory, video review and a swim, or it is postponed with a full refund. Nobody is taught in a rip because the timetable said so.

Five Students to One Coach

In the water the ratio is never more than five to one, and for children never more than four to one. That is low enough for the coach to see every attempt, correct the specific thing that is wrong and push a board at the right moment, rather than shouting general encouragement from the shore. Groups are also split by level rather than by booking date, so a complete beginner is never mixed with somebody who has surfed for three seasons and wants to work on turns.

Safety That Is Actually Practised

Every coach holds a current lifesaving award and first-aid certificate and re-qualifies annually. Rip currents are identified and marked before each session, the safe zone is defined with flags, students are counted in and out of the water, and a rescue board and radio are on the beach at all times. The briefing covers what a rip is, how to recognise one and what to do if caught — knowledge students keep long after the course, which is the point of teaching it properly.

Equipment Matched to the Person

Boards are chosen by weight, height and ability rather than handed out from a pile: long soft-tops for first sessions, shorter foam and mini-mals as students progress, and hard boards once they can catch unbroken waves. Wetsuits come in two thicknesses across every adult and child size, including women's cuts, with boots, gloves and hoods available in winter. Everything is rinsed in fresh water, dried on shaped hangers and replaced on a schedule rather than when it fails.

Video Review That Changes Something

Every improver session is filmed from the beach, and the footage is watched over a hot drink afterwards with a coach explaining what to change and why. Most people have no idea what their pop-up actually looks like, and a single clip usually fixes a habit that verbal coaching has failed to shift for weeks. Clips are shared with students afterwards, and week-long courses include a comparison between the first day and the last, which is often startling.

Comfort Before and After

The base has hot showers, changing rooms, lockers, a drying room, a rinse area and somewhere warm to sit with a drink afterwards, which matters enormously on an Atlantic coast in October. Transport to the chosen beach is included, along with a windbreak, a first-aid station and hot drinks on the sand. Students who arrive without towels or warm clothes can borrow them. Nobody has to change in a car park in the wind, which is where most people decide never to surf again.

Services

Courses and Programmes

Single lessons, beginner courses, improver coaching, camps, kids' clubs and adaptive sessions.

Taster Lessons

Two hours covering beach safety, paddling, the pop-up on the sand and then repeated attempts in whitewater with a coach beside you. Board, wetsuit, transport to the chosen beach, insurance and a hot drink afterwards are included, and the great majority of participants stand up within the session. Minimum age is eight and there is no upper limit; our oldest first-timer this year was seventy-four. Sessions run twice daily in summer and at weekends year-round.

Beginner Courses

Five sessions over consecutive days or spread across weekends, taking students from first contact with a board to catching unbroken waves and turning along the face. Content includes reading a beach, positioning in the line-up, surf etiquette and self-rescue as well as technique. All equipment is included, video review runs from the third session, and every participant receives a written assessment of what they can do independently and what to practise next.

Improver and Advanced Coaching

For surfers who can already catch waves but have stopped progressing: paddle efficiency, wave selection, bottom turns, trimming, duck diving, positioning and how to read a sandbank. Sessions are filmed and reviewed, and coaching can be one-to-one or in groups of three. We also run pre-trip preparation for people travelling somewhere heavier, and a winter block focused on fitness, breath-holding and handling bigger surf safely.

Surf Camps and Weeks

Week-long camps combining two sessions a day with video analysis, theory, yoga, equipment workshops and evening meals together, with accommodation in partner guesthouses or a campsite five minutes from the base. Camps run at three levels, group size is capped at twelve, and the programme adjusts to the forecast rather than following a fixed schedule. Non-surfing partners can join the meals and the activities at a reduced rate.

Kids' Club and School Groups

Holiday clubs for ages eight to sixteen running weekly through the summer, mixing surfing with bodyboarding, beach games, water-safety training and a certificate. Ratios are four to one, coaches hold child-specific qualifications, and equipment is sized properly for children rather than adapted from adult stock. School groups are taught free of charge during term time as part of the local water-safety programme, and we keep loan equipment for children who cannot afford it.

Adaptive Surfing and Private Groups

Adaptive sessions with trained coaches, tandem boards, beach wheelchairs and additional water support for participants with physical or learning disabilities, run monthly and at any time by arrangement. Private groups — families, stag and hen parties, companies and clubs — can book whole sessions with their own timing, equipment and catering. Gift vouchers are available and valid for two years, which makes them one of our most common winter sales.

Booking and Conditions

Tell us your level, your dates and the ages of anyone under sixteen, and we will book the right session and tell you what the swell is expected to do that week. The daily conditions report is published every morning and is free for anyone to read.

Camps, kids' clubs, adaptive sessions, school programmes and private groups are arranged through the same office.
